Episode #140:
Jemina Bouma Perez on Rice: Cognitive Science, Passion for Education, and Culture of Care.
Jemina Bouma Perez is a graduate of Rice University with a Bachelor’s degree in Cognitive Science.
At Rice, Professors encouraged students to come to office hours, not just to discuss the course material, but to speak with them.
Jemina was persuaded and visited during office hours.
The summer after Freshman year, Jemina was in a rut, without summer plans. She decided to go home and relax.
Shortly after, a Spanish Professor reached out to her about a community volunteer opportunity in Nicaragua.
He had seen a bulletin and thought she might be interested.
She was.
Jemina spent the next 2 months in the Boaco region of Nicaragua with a couple of volunteers helping a community of 350 people get on the internet and learn how to use laptops and computers.
Visiting during office hours turned a dry summer into a cool experience!
