IIT Bombay was the first IIT to be set up with foreign assistance. Established in the year 1958, funds for the establishment of IIT Bombay came from UNESCO as Roubles from the then USSR government. The institute is located in Powai, one of the northern suburbs of Mumbai. Second in the row after IIT Kharagpur, the institute is recognized all over the world for being a leader in the field of engineering education and research. IIT Bombay was followed by IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur and IIT Delhi.
In the year 1961, IIT Bombay was declared as an institution of national importance and was accorded the status of a university with a power to award its own degrees and diplomas. IIT Bombay offers admission to undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in engineering and technology, sciences, management and humanities. Research and academic programmes at IIT Bombay are driven by an outstanding faculty, many of whom are reputed for their research contributions internationally. Some of the degree programmes offered by IIT Bombay are Bachelor of Technology, Executive MBA, Master of Science, Master of Business Administration, Master of Sciences, Bachelor of Science in Economics, etc.
