IIT Kanpur is one of the premier engineering institutions of the country. Established by the Government of India in 1959, IIT Kanpur was established with the aim to provide meaningful education, to conduct original research of the highest standard and to provide leadership in technological innovation. The campus of the institute is spread over 1055 acres and nearly all IITK students live on campus. Located in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, the institute was declared to be an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India under the Institutes of Technology Act. IIT Kanpur's motto translates to "Lead me from darkness to light."
IIT Kanpur was one of the first IITs to be established after IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay and IIT Madras. The institute was formed as a part of the Kanpur Indo-American Programme (KIAP) that was set up to collaborate closely with the outside world and thereby keep pace with the ever-changing world of science and technology. Under KIAP, IIT Kanpur received technical assistance from a consortium of nine leading institutions of U.S.A.

Institute gives Merit-cum-Means (MCM) Scholarships to meritorious and needy students.Students receive a full tuition waiver and pocket allowance of Rs 1000 pm for the duration of the program.
