MIT and Caltech are unarguably the best universities for STEM in the world. Both universities are very prestigious in their own right. Caltech is more focused on science whilst MIT is geared towards engineering for undergraduate studies. However, Caltech does have a huge emphasis on aviation/aerospace engineering. They run NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory: the national research facility that carries out robotic space and Earth science missions. Both, MIT and Caltech, are fierce competitors in aerospace. Caltech is focused on astronautics whilst MIT is engrossed in aeronautics research. For graduate studies in the aviation-related field, Caltech offers a 1-year master's program in space engineering (a one-of-a-kind program in my opinion). But, undoubtedly, Caltech has the best undergraduate and graduate program for planetary science. On one hand, MIT has a total student enrollment of 11,376, its setting is urban, and the campus size is 166 acres. On the other hand, Caltech has a total enrollment of 2,238 as of 2017 and is 124 acres. It is evident from this fact that MIT is bigger in terms of both, area and enrollment.

In the end, it boils down to what you are looking for. If you are interested in hands-on engineering as an undergraduate, or a double major with business, political science or economics, then MIT is the place to be.

Harvey Mudd College and UC Berkeley are excellent competitors for MIT and Caltech. Harvey Mudd has been widely regarded as the best liberal arts STEM-focused school. It has one of the highest return of investment. Harvey Mudd College ranked No. 2 for “Best Career Placement” and No. 4 for “Top 50 Colleges That Pay You Back” in The Princeton Review’s 2017 edition of Colleges That Pay You Back: The 200 Schools That Give You the Best Bang for Your Tuition Buck. Needless to say, the University of California, Berkeley has cemented its legacy as an all-round university, ranking highly in STEM and humanities.
