So they use the Cialfo to send all the transcripts and everything into the common app universities. And then But then you have UCAS. Counselors would need to go outside of the platform, send transcripts, and reference letters to UCAS separately and students applying to Australia that would happen outside and then you know, Canada. And it was a mess! That is Rohan Pasari, Co-founder and CEO of Cialfo, a Global Ed-Tech Company based in Singapore. Hello, I am your host, Venkat Raman. Cialfo is a Common Application Platform for International Students. International students typically apply to colleges and universities in 2-3 destination countries - each with their unique requirements and process. This results in a lot of different portals, and separate series of steps, not just for the students, but for the entire ecosystem of counselors, teachers, recommenders and schools. To address this challenge, Cialfo offers Direct Apply - a one-stop application for international applicants. Venkat Raman 1:46 Rohan joins us on our podcast to tell us What Direct Apply is, Feature Highlights, Benefits for Int’l Students, Counselors and Schools, and Why even Colleges and Universities like it. Before we jump into the podcast, here are the Hi-Fives, Five Highlights from the podcast: [What is Direct Apply?] What DirectPlay really is it's a simple application from unify in one place that students need to apply to over 600 universities currently, and 48000 programs in these universities, in over 40 countries. [Direct Apply Highlights] You know, what it does is it brings all these different universities at a global context in one place. So that in itself makes it much more unifying, simplified experience for students to apply to universities. [How do Counselors Benefit?] The counselors lifecycle around the year, they have so many administrative tasks. Yeah, addition to the primary job, which is counseling students. And during the application season, it becomes a lot of stress and pressure for them. So having a platform direct apply often takes a lot of pressure out of that. [Cialfo Education Advisors] And we, we would have, you know, typically two to three education advisors dedicated for a school depending on you know, because our education advisors are experts in one or two destinations. [Why Colleges Like Direct Apply] So the most important thing is for them use a removes friction for the students to apply them improves discoverability of their colleges. You know, because if in the absence of Direct Apply, students are searching and experiencing that college themselves, but then they would have to leave Cialfo And you use our universities portal to apply. So it adds friction, right. Venkat Raman 4:01 These were the Hi5s, brought to you by “College Matters. Alma Matters.” Subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Venkat Raman 4:12 Now. I'm sure you want to hear the entire podcast with Rohan. So without further ado, here's the podcast with Rohan Pasari! ----------------- Venkat Raman 4:22 If you're ready, let's jump right in. Maybe the basic question to ask is what is Direct Apply? Hey, Venkat, First of all, thank you for having me on the show again. It's such a perfect time for us because you know, we just recently completed our five year anniversary. Wow, congratulations. Thank you. Thank you. We are in fact, after this podcast, we are having a bit of a celebration with the team to you know far, far off five year anniversary. So good to be back here. And you know, where you ask what is direct reply? Before I jump into what is direct reply, maybe just some more context about what CFO is, you know, CFO, is a career readiness and college application platform. We started in 2017, to really work with students and counselors around the world to help them with their career exploration, the college application journey. And today's however, works with over 2000 high schools around the world, across 105 different countries, over 300,000 students on our platform, using CFO and you know, we have over 10,000 universities listed on a platform. And, you know, we'll talk about how many of them are actually using direct apply to receive applications, objects, you know, what's the Elfo, you know, has been, and then we launched Greg apply last year, as part of the platform to make higher education even more accessible by simplifying the global university application process, the time and energy and money for the students. So what direct reply really is, it's a simple application form, in a unified in one place, that students need to apply to over 600 universities currently, and 48,000 programs in these universities in over 40 countries. So United States, UK, Canada, in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai, of course, in the rest of Europe, as well. And students can use this singular platform to apply to universities around the world, track the status of their application, or get admissions decisions all in one place. So you know, simply put, it's an easy, reliable application tool within CFO makes higher ed, a lot more accessible for students. Venkat Raman 7:20 How did you guys come up with this? I mean, what are the origins? Was this, like, a huge demand from the students? Or is it something that you guys envisioned? How did this come about? Yeah, it really actually came from the hard conversations, or the demands of the high school counselors that we work with doing this for five years, but interconnected and well connected with the counselors, but they feel very comfortable telling us like, you know, what, next, who they want on Cialfo. And so on Cialfo, Students apply to about three countries. On average, right, and that has increased, you know, from pre pandemic, to post pandemic. And the counselors, you know, started asking us, like, look, you know, you know, the application management part of the offer is great, but can we do something that, you know, allows students to even apply to these universities. And, you know, in one single way, and, and the issue that they face is that, you know, they have to send reference letters and transcripts, on different portals across the world. Now, in the US, you have the common app. So that is integrated into Cialfo. So they use the alpha to send all the transcripts and everything into the common app, universities. And then then you have UCAS, counselors would need to go outside of the platform, send transcripts, and reference letters to UCAS separately, and students applying to Australia, that would happen outside and then you know, Canada, and it was a mess for counselors, not only to send all of these documents, but also to track all these applications. Sure. And it was the same for the students. They were adding all this information, and they were having to repeat and resubmit across all different platforms. And it didn't it was not making sense. And it was limiting higher education opportunities for students. This complexity of this entire admission process. And you know, believe it or not, this is among the top two reasons that makes higher education less accessible, right? The other reason of course, being cost cost. And so, you know, let's take a moment to you know, have that thinking The application process of the universities is as important as the cost of higher ed. To make, you know, and so we so we were like, We got to do something about it. And we were already starting to work with universities since 2020. You know, two different kinds of, you know, virtual affairs and physical affairs and different engagement activities. And we like, you know, we can look to solve this. And that's how we started really working on direct reply. And here we are, we launched that last year in 2001. You know, as a Betta, so a few universities, a few high schools started using it. And we were very lucky to have a few early adopter high schools and universities that gave us incredible feedback. And now in 2022, we have about 600 universities and close to 1000 High Schools globally adopting Cialfo's Direct Apply for their students. So it's really exciting. Venkat Raman 11:09 You know, I understand it's a one stop shop for applications for students. What are the kinds of, you know, features and benefits that students get out of it, in addition to the being a single place to do it? Yeah, so one thing to recognize is that direct reply, in a global context has never been done. So it's incredibly challenging and motivating. For us at the same time. Like you have the common app in the US, and you have UCAS, and in the UK, so we don't really have a frame of reference model. But, you know, what it does is it brings all these different universities at a global context in one place. So that in itself makes it much more unifying, simplified experience for students to apply to universities. And that allows students to make well informed decisions, which is in their best interest. And, you know, getting unbiased information on the application process. And what it takes to actually get into these universities, is really important. Because in the lack of that, you know, even though you have some of this information, all this information online, become so complex, that students end up going to, you know, different kinds of third party, third parties or agents, and that should really biases. How they look at colleges. So the number one thing is like, you know, to get an unbiased experience, and information on these higher ed opportunities. The second thing is when you know, they apply to these universities, they get eligible to get scholarships from Cialfo. So we have a scholarship pool of $10 million. And by using Cr, by using self directed stuff, students automatically get qualified to do scholarship opportunities. This is in addition to any university scholarships that are offered to students at universities discretion. So, you know, to get, you know, part of this pool of Cialfo's $10 million scholarship opportunity that, you know, again, helps a student make higher ed, a little more accessible. And then the third element is that, you know, we have a team of expert education advisors that are available to help students and to end with the college application process now. You know, we work with different kinds of high schools, we work with schools that have, you know, incredibly, highly qualified, high school college counselors. And they're very well resourced schools, in the ratio of students to college counselors would be, you know, 20:1 or 30:1. Students get, you know, very dedicated support within that high school, but that's really impacting 1% of students around the world. 5% of students around the world, and 9% You know, the schools either don't have any college counselor, or they would have like, you know, a subject teacher acting as a role of a college counselor to send documents. So in those cases in those schools that we work with, you know, the schools wanted and now you've been able to provide education advisors that handhold students through this entire process, we are in and post application process, again, as part of DirectPlay. So simplified college application process, unbiased access to information, authorship opportunities, and education advisors are some of the key parts of using the on Cialfo. Venkat Raman 15:28 Do the students who use Directly Apply, can they directly interact with the colleges as well, the colleges, we mentioned 600 or so colleges, right, universities that are participating? So are they able to get some questions answered and all that good stuff by interacting with those colleges? So it's a great question, as part of the university's being on direct apply, they actually want to also engage with students are part of the application process and post application process, and providing them any support or guidance. So students can do that as part of the application process. But some universities, in fact, a lot of the universities have opted on Cialfo, to engage with students more proactively, even in the pre application process. And it can be as soon as you know, as soon as for students in grade 11, or even pretend that if students wanted to interact with these universities, they could. So a lot of the universities choose to start engaging students in the pre application process. And of course, all the universities will engage with students and scialfa during the actual application process and post application process. Venkat Raman 16:53 Now, if you're applying to universities in the US and UK, just for starters, the information I put in as a student, all my profile information, do I do that once and you automatically make it available to the application that I that I ended up, you know, putting together for the UK or Australia or whatever the country where the college might be located? Is that a one time fee that gets picked up? Yeah, so, So you're exactly right. So let me just walk through the flow of how a student will experience Direct Apply before they start interacting with DA, students and Cialfo, you know, start searching for colleges, you know, start, you know, just interacting with different college application procedures, or even just knowing about colleges in a more deeper way. So we have, you know, nearly every university in the world, at least in you know, in key countries that students are interested in. And I want a platform, the admissions detailed guidelines, tuition fees, the courses, course duration, that allows students to start making informed decisions on where to apply and where to, you know, where do they perhaps either see them from the college search experiences start, you know, adding their colleges on cell phone, the long list short list of the appointments. And as the name would suggest, these lists refer to the interest level of that student for that college. Now, when it comes closer to the application period, students start making their final choices or when they actually want to apply, then they start adding that college within the Direct Apply list. So they just click a button that gets added in that direct applying list. And this is where your Direct Apply comes. So the go to now, the direct Apply tab, on Cialfo. And now they can start applying to universities that they have selected in just five simple steps. So the first thing they will do is to choose a course. So for example, they will say I'm interested in engineering. And then they'll say I'm interested in engineering at Durham. And I'm also interested in engineering at Monash University. So when they apply when they choose these courses, they can now start filling out a single application form as you rightly pointed out, which includes their personal details, academic details, test scores, you know, and all of that within that single application from then they start uploading in the third step, all the necessary documents. So you know, it would be the passport, and, you know, some other key information. Now for all of this information that they're filling in And the documents that the uploading, won't have to do it again, with your application, right, so it saves them a lot of time, that single unified application portal. Some universities, however, will ask for additional documents, or personal statements or essays. And this is where they start filling up in the next step. Questions dedicated for different universities. Once all this is done, they are ready to submit the application for the university. And universities may have an application fee is paid out on the platform, which is the last and final step. So that's it. After that step, they're done. And then the universities, you know, would start getting back to them on you know, the results or if you know, they have any other questions. So it's really that simple. And this is the student journey. Of course, for the listeners, now they have to upload and submit what we call counselor documents that will be clear letters. as it's called in the UK, or recommendation letters, or letter recommendation, as it's called in the US, in our transcripts, prepare grades, as needed by different universities. But again, they just have to upload it once on Cialfo. And they can keep sending it to different universities all within the platform with a click of a button. So yeah, that's that's, you know, the flow for students who transfers. Venkat Raman 21:41 Well, that sounds outstanding. And I'm assuming that different high schools and the teachers and all that are on this platform, so they can write the letters of recommendation and all that as part of this overall platform. Right. Okay. How many? How many students are using it? You know, at this point, just the direct apply? Rohan 22:06 So, you know, we are in the midst of the application cycle, literally right now. Yeah. So, you know, tomorrow's a really important deadline. 15th, October, for both Oxford Cambridge medicine applications in the UK, a lot of early decision deadlines. Us. So, you know, we'll get more accurate numbers by by the end of the application cycle, but we are expecting over 10,000 students to use it this year. Venkat Raman 22:42 Folks, like the counselors and high schools, how are they benefiting from this? What are you hearing? or what have you sort of put together for them? For the counselors, for example? Yeah, so for the schools, slash the college counselors, you know, first is that students are getting more access to higher and higher education opportunities, which is, you know, this is an integral part of the job. But it's hard to be able to do this without a platform. So an objective discovery process, evaluation, enrollment experience, that they can provide to the students all in one platform, so they see that as a huge benefit. But if you see counselors, lifecycle around the year, they have so many administrative tasks, yeah, addition to the primary job, which is counseling students. And during the application season, it becomes a lot of stress and pressure for them. So having a platform that, you know, Director pliancy, often takes a lot of pressure out of that, you know, all these different, you know, portals and sending, and then tracking and, you know, managing all of that, and, you know, different emails that they get. So it really simplifies all of that. But that's the first step. The second step is, you know, having the oversight on the applications and students tracking the results, you know, sending additional documents, all of that tracking can also happen on cell phones, instead of like, you know, 10 different products for students. And then, you know, outs for schools that don't have a you know, a team of dedicated college counselors cannot afford that resource in our education advisors that I mentioned earlier in, yes. You know, what to the students pre application during application and even post application for like Visa Services. And these education and writers can provide local language support for students and parents, you know, really allows them to expand and scale their You know, so you should for for the families, which are very, very grateful for and happy about. So that's, you know, you know why a school really likes Direct Apply. Venkat Raman 25:19 You know, I wanted to kind of follow up on one aspect. So yeah, the schools that have counselors, obviously, like you mentioned, you know, maybe there are 5%, or some small number of schools, but for the students who don't have access to counselors, you're providing these advisors or counselors, now. So when a student who doesn't have a counselor, you know, open signs and creates an account, does this whole thing about applying to colleges starts to apply? Do they get assigned one of your advisors? Or do they have to seek out one of them for help? Or how does that work? Yeah, so typically, even if a school does not have a dedicated college counselor, that is like a trained college counselor, they weren't, you know, applying to under subject teachers to do some of the administrative work of sending documents. So there's always that that is controlled by the school. So we don't get into like sending documents and transcripts and creating rates for the student, right? I mean, that's always the counseling part. The support of pre application during application from a student experience point of view is where our educational advisors come in. Yeah. And yeah, we we would have, you know, typically two to three, education advice is dedicated for a school depending on, you know, because our education advisors are experts in one or two destinations, so they will export in the US, for US universities, or UK universities, and again, the application process, and everything is quite different. So depending on what is the primary destination that a student is looking at, they could work with, you know, one or multiple education advisors. Venkat Raman 27:15 Okay. And the system, keeps track of deadlines and reminds the students and all that, I'm assuming, right, Rohan 27:23 that's already been part of Cialfo for multiple years now. The deadlines and application requirements is part of the portal part of the platform and student get students get reminders of that, and counselors get reminders of that. So it keeps them in check and accountable for any you know, it's a complex process. All these universities have different rounds in different deadlines. And if you're applying for a scholarship is a different deadline, sometimes. National Student It's a different deadline. You know, it can be really messy. So you know, yeah, Venkat Raman 27:56 it's a nightmare. It's a nightmare. Yeah, I think that's, that's a good thing to manage. Venkat Raman 28:04 How do colleges like this? What What advantages or benefits do they have? By getting on by your students getting on direct apply? The most important thing is for them you stain removes friction for the students to apply bursaries and improves discoverability of their colleges. You know, because if in the absence of direct apply, students are searching and experiencing that college and stuff, but then they would have to leave scialfa And, you know, use the university's portal to apply. So it adds friction, right? Yeah. And the same thing for counselors, and it increases the chance of missing deadlines and missing some documents. So it removes friction for universities by being part of direct apply. You know, you asked your previous question, you know, do universities engage students, and that is also something that they do students and counselors directly on the same platform for both discoverability but also during the application process. And the third thing is that, you know, we mentioned about scholarships, and, you know, our education advice is providing, you know, that handheld support to the students during the application process and even you know, with post employment work like Visa. Yeah, that improves yield for the universities. It improves the chances of students enrolling into the university by being part of direct apply. So that's why you know, we've, you know, really in the short span of two years, we've added 600 universities on DA. Venkat Raman 29:53 Now, you mentioned visa, Visa, so for different countries. So that The Direct Apply platform also helps with that? Yeah, and, you know, I was, I've been an international student, and myself, and, you know, we certainly one of the most painful parts of the students journey, you know, imagine a student the, and they've gone through this arduous process of applying for universities discovering, you know, which colleges would be a good fit, you know, applying getting and being happy and like, oh, which is also complex. Yeah. And it requires a lot of people work in patients. Yeah. Right. And so, we have our own in house experts, that help students with this visa assistance, to depending on where the students are in, in our which countries they are residing in, and which destination, they are choosing to go to, we help them with, in Document, document preparation, visa appointment, submitting the application, and in some cases were required, even with mock interviews. So we do that we do that in house, but we also work with a company called VFS, which is the largest, you know, these are a visa service company. It's not only for students, it's also actually for adults looking to tourist visa, so we work with that as a partner that support us, you know, as and when needed. Venkat Raman 31:31 So this is really a full service application that you're aiming for here, you've got most of the pieces is that anything missing? Anything that maybe residence or, you know, campus housing, and all those types of things? Maybe the next step? Yeah, you know, we'll keep adding to this entire service. You know, we're Cialfo started in 2017. And we've been upgrading that every year, basically, that we call from counsel students. And you know, so we'll apply, our goal is to make higher education accessible for millions of students globally. How can we create an exceptional 360 experience for the entire ecosystem, with students and families front and center? So, you know, we are identifying different parts of the application process that is complex that is painful that, you know, the students absolutely need and add that. Add that into the journey that makes it more seamless with the ultimate aim of again, making it accessible. Venkat Raman 32:40 That's outstanding. That's outstanding. So anything else is there? What would we expect in the next year or two? In from Direct Apply? Rohan 32:51 Yes, specifically speaking, we are adding hundreds of more universities on DA every year, more high schools are adopting a direct apply our tool as their exclusive application. That, you know, you infer that we are adding more solutions to enhance the experience for students and counselors, to ultimately again, you know, make it reliable, and the trusted source for applications in the world of higher ed. So a lot of things to a lot of things to come. And really, we're just getting started. You know, it is not being done, you know, at a global context, which makes it challenging and motivating, at the same time. But, you know, we're making tremendous strides forward. To make higher ed accessible for students. Venkat Raman 33:55 You mentioned this a couple of times. So my question to you is, is that anyone else doing this? Do you have any, quote unquote, competition for this? Or are you guys sort of, in unchartered territory, like you said? In a global context, we very much are in uncharted territories. You know, there are organizations that are doing that for domestic applications in particular countries. You know, there's a company in the US, they own domestic applications, mostly UCAS does an incredible job in the UK, you know, those in Canada, the Ontario system doesn't only for that state. But again, you know, students are not only looking at one or two countries, right, they look at multiple countries and bringing it all together in one global ecosystem. Yes. You know, to EC offers a pioneer. I'm sure others will, you know, jumping into this sphere, that we'll get to know as we go along. But you know, We are right now we're in uncharted territories, which is, which is, you know, incredibly exciting. Venkat Raman 35:09 So rollin any closing thoughts as we start winding down here, anything that we haven't talked about about direct reply or about Cialfo, or something, you want to let the listeners know Yes this was great, Venkat, thank you for having us. And, you know, for those listening, who are using Direct Apply, either from a student or parent point of view or high school counselor or university, you know, we always, you know, we will do get your feedback on, you know, what we do well, what we can do better, so that, you know, we can keep improving this, you know, for the benefit of the ecosystem. So, thank you so much. Venkat Raman 35:55 Absolutely. Thank you. And I think you guys are doing great work and always want to be in touch. So, we'll talk again soon, but for right now, take care. Be safe. Thank you. —--------------- Hi again! Hope you enjoyed our podcast with Rohan Pasari of Cialfo on Direct Apply.
