Liberal arts colleges like Union College require all engineering students to take 12 elective courses and 28 core courses (major-related courses) in their four years of undergraduate studies. Public and private universities have less emphasis upon elective courses, thus a majority of the coursework is pertaining to the major. Most of the private and public universities have two-semester per academic year system where students take 5-7 courses. Interdisciplinary research is one of the perks of studying in a liberal arts school.
